Overview of Mavericks

Mavericks in Half Moon Bay, California, is one of the world's most famous big wave surf spots. Its ability to harness and amplify the energy of the Pacific Ocean has provided big wave surfers with one of the most perfect, unique, and dangerous big waves on the planet. The waves at Mavericks are truly the pinnacle of big wave surfing. This spot not only handles world-record-sized waves, but it's also cold and home to the man in the grey suit. Surfing a wave like Mavericks requires years of training, experience, and courage. Paddling out at this spot should never be taken lightly, as Mavericks have taken the lives of a handful of highly experienced surfers.

What Are the Ideal Conditions for Mavericks?

The ideal surfing conditions at Mavericks in Half Moon Bay include the following:

  • Time of Year - November to February are the prime months for Mavericks. The spot demands a lot of energy from the Pacific Ocean to show its true face. As a result, winter on the West Coast is typically the only time this type of energy can be generated.
  • Swell Direction - Mavericks comes to life and shows its world-class conditions on massive W and NW swells. W swells are typically more dangerous, while NW swells are more lined up.
  • Wave Size - Mavericks needs a massive W or NW swell (20ft plus) to turn on.
  • Wind - Easterly wind is offshore at Mavericks. However, the best conditions are when the winds blow very lightly out of the E, are glassy, or are extremely light onshore.
  • Tide - The best tide is typically low to incoming medium.
  • Crowd Factor - Mavericks is known as one of the best big waves in the world. On good days, the crowds can get pretty heavy.
